The pomegranate is an interesting fruit in more ways than one. It is not new by any stretch of the imagination; however it has only recently become very popular in recent years. This is in part because companies hailed it as the next super food, claiming that the odd, alien like fruit cured cancer and helped people lose weight without legitimate research to back up the statements. As the FDA cracked down on the super food claims, love for the pomegranate began to fizzle subsequently. But, while the benefits of pomegranate seeds may not include curing cancer and slimming down the hefty overnight, there is much more to the fruit than meets the eye.

Amongst natural blood thinners, pomegranates are not very well known. Foundation foods like the super effective garlic, traditional medicine mainstay ginger and even fish oil blood thinner supplements are all likely more popular choices for correcting problems with blood viscosity. But, amongst foods that thin blood, pomegranates are actually thought to be rather effective. The juice made from the seeds of the pomegranate (the only consumable part of the fruit) is touted as an effective management tool for thick blood and the prevention of dangerous clots. It is still not been determined exactly what in the pomegranate creates its blood thinning abilities, but it may have to do with the polyphenols contained in the fruit. These chemicals are antioxidants, and they are mighty effective at battling cell damaging free radicals within the body. They are found in many foods and are one of the key benefits of grapes, blueberries, and beans.

The benefits of pomegranate seeds in relation to keeping blood flow healthy potentially go even further than just its possible entry among other known blood thinning foods. The fruit is also thought to help increase circulation. This is useful to the body in many ways. For instance, when circulation throughout the body is reduced, the oxygen transported by the blood does not get where it needs to go fast enough, which can cause problems. And, since the blood also serves as a waste removal system of sorts, circulatory dysfunction can also affect this important process. While still speculatory, there is some evidence to suggest that those taking medications geared toward lowering blood pressure may find that regular consumption of pomegranate seeds or juice interferes with the medication and lowers blood pressure even further. So, while essentially hypothetically effective for this purpose, it is important that those on medications for reducing blood pressure speak with a health care provider before considering pomegranates.

The interaction risks do not stop at blood pressure medication alone, however. People taking certain cholesterol medications like Lipitor or Crestor should speak to a doctor before exploring the health benefits of pomegranate seeds. And, those using blood thinning medications like Warfarin should consult with their physician before using pomegranates for thinning blood or as a method for how to prevent blood clots. This can lead to excessive bleeding or the blood becoming too thin, which can be dangerous.

In most cases however, pomegranates are safe for consumption (beware however the rind and exterior which are thought to have toxic properties). But, there is a limit to how much pomegranate juice or volume of seeds is considered safe. Between eight and twelve ounces of juice daily is considered safe, and this amount varies for certain individuals. For instance, for the management of atherosclerosis, the intake of 50 ml daily has been suggested. And, 40 grams daily has been proposed for the management of high cholesterol. But, there is no right or wrong answer when enjoying the fruit as proper intake may be different for everyone. Therefore, when enjoying for medicinal benefits, it is absolutely essential to seek the advice of a health care provider, in order to prevent the risk of dangerous drug interactions or health conditions like overly thin blood resulting from too much pomegranate.

The benefits of pomegranate seeds may not have lived up the hype produced by some bad seeds within the alternative healing community that set out to profit on the growing popularity of the age old fruit. But, there are many ways that the juice filled seeds can positively affect the body. Thinning the blood, reducing blood pressure and lowering cholesterol are all thought to be potential boosts afforded enjoyers of the alien fruit. And if for no reason otherwise, the unique taste and antioxidant overload provided by the pomegranate is reason enough for many to indulge.
